Every since I was a little girl, I have always loved Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love everything about the season. I love the weather, food, activities, and most of all decorating. As a child, when Thanksgiving rolled around, I started asking my mom..."when can we put up the Christmas tree?"Decorating for every holiday throughout the year in our home was an "experience." We would have food, music and most of all fun. My mom would let us help her decorate the whole house. I remember one Christmas we had a lady come to help us decorate. It was the most fun ever. For a whole 2 days we made floral arrangements, played Christmas music, had great Christmas cookies, and decorated the tree. I believe it planted a great seed in my heart for the love of the home and creating vibrant environments that have life.
In my heart Thanksgiving is a prelude to Christmas in every way. It is a time to reflect on what God has done and offer thanksgiving. It is a time to focus on the things and people we are grateful for. So many times we get overwhelmed with the details instead of enjoying the journey with our family and friends. We get to caught up in everything being perfect. We get bogged down in so much stuff, we miss the important things of why we celebrate. We miss the relationships with the people we love. I have been guilty. It is a time to prepare our hearts with Thanksgiving for Christmas. A celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and His purpose: To be born as a babe, live a perfect life, die a horrible death on a cross, be buried in a borrowed tomb, and raised on the 3rd day for you and me that we would have eternal life in Him. He came to save His people form their sins.
As I look back to when I was a little girl, the excitement of decorating, baking, wrapping, etc. was fun and I knew the Christmas story but did not know this Jesus personally, I realize that God used the "experience" to plant seeds in my heart to prepare me to worship Him when I came to know Him personally through His Son Jesus. I am grateful that in my home Thanksgiving and Christmas were celebrated with zeal and life. The point is to never under estimate the things God will use to plant seeds of truth in hearts that bring life. So as we enter the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, I want to encourage you to enjoy each moment with your family, friends, and strangers as you get your homes decorated and hearts ready to worship the King. You never know how it will impact their lives for eternity.
